OLD FASHIONED RICE PUDDING

Rice pudding is one of those timeless comfort desserts that has been enjoyed around the world for centuries—from ancient Persia to medieval Europe and beyond. This classic version is rich, creamy, and gently sweet, making it a cozy treat for any occasion. It’s simple to prepare, uses pantry staples, and can be customized with your favorite toppings like cinnamon, nutmeg, or whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, add the rice, milk, granulated sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir well to blend everything together.
  2. Bring to a Boil
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  3. Simmer
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 1 to 1½ hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The pudding is ready when the rice is tender and the mixture has thickened.
  4. Cool Slightly
Remove from heat and let the pudding cool for a few minutes.
  5. Prepare the Topping
In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and butter pieces.
  6. Broil
Transfer the pudding to a baking dish. Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture over the top, then broil for a few minutes until bubbly and golden.
  7. Serve
Enjoy warm, with your favorite toppings.
