Natural Clove and Garlic Infused Balm

A traditional warming balm for external comfort

Introduction

This clove and garlic infused balm is a time-honored home preparation valued for its warming, antimicrobial, and soothing properties. When used externally and sparingly, it is commonly applied to support comfort in cases of mild muscle tension, joint stiffness, or as a protective skin balm.

This remedy is intended for external use only and should be used with care, as both garlic and cloves are potent botanicals.

Ingredients

  • 3–4 fresh garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
  • 1 tablespoon whole dried cloves, lightly cracked
  • 100 g petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
  • (Optional) 1 teaspoon beeswax (for a firmer balm)
  • (Optional) 5 drops essential oil (peppermint, lavender, or eucalyptus)

Preparation

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry all utensils, bowls, and storage containers.
  2. Peel and crush the garlic cloves, then let them rest for 10 minutes to activate their natural compounds.
  3. Lightly crack the dried cloves to release their aromatic oils.
  4. Prepare a clean, dry glass jar for the finished balm.

Instructions

  1. Place the petroleum jelly (and beeswax, if using) into a heat-safe bowl.
  2. Melt gently using a double-boiler method over low heat.
  3. Once fully melted, add the crushed garlic and cracked cloves.
  4. Keep the mixture on very low heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • Do not allow the mixture to boil.
  5. Remove from heat and carefully strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to remove all solids.
  6. Pour the infused balm into a clean jar.
  7. Allow it to cool and solidify at room temperature before sealing.

Variations

  • Warming Balm: Add a small pinch of ginger powder or cayenne during infusion
  • Soothing Balm: Add lavender or chamomile essential oil after straining
  • Foot Balm: Add peppermint oil to help refresh tired feet and reduce odor
  • More Natural Option: Replace part of the petroleum jelly with coconut oil and beeswax

Usage & Safety Tips

  • External use only
  • Always perform a patch test before regular use
  • Apply a very small amount to clean, intact skin
  • Avoid broken, irritated, or sensitive areas
  • Garlic can cause irritation if overused—less is more
  • Keep away from eyes, mucous membranes, and children
  • Store in a cool, dark place
  • Use within 2–4 weeks for best freshness

Conclusion

Clove and garlic infused balm is a simple yet potent traditional remedy when prepared carefully and used responsibly. While it can offer comforting warmth and mild relief for everyday discomforts, it should never replace professional medical care for serious or persistent conditions.

Used mindfully, this balm can be a valuable addition to a natural self-care routine.
